For anyone who grew up in the 1970's and 80's, you will recognize some of the '70's characters in this film. For example, Tony, played by Frank Langella, was the son of a Mafia leader in New York. When he first meets Marilyn, played by Sigourney Weaver, he takes a liking to her. When Marilyn goes to see her mother, she is quite afraid of Tony's boyfriend, played by Tony Curtis. When Marilyn finally makes a decision to leave Tony behind, the gangsters start following her. When Tony tries to fight back, he is killed by the gangsters. It's the beginning of a relationship between Marilyn and Tony. Later, Tony and Marilyn fall in love. Marilyn tries to help Tony by getting him out of prison, but he is killed by a mobster, Tony's boyfriend. Marilyn is never able to tell Tony that Tony has died. She doesn't know how to cope with her loss. At the end of the movie, Marilyn and Tony take a trip to California. Marilyn tells Tony that she is in love with him. Marilyn doesn't know how to react. She is confused. She has to go through her emotions and find the answer. Tony tells Marilyn that he loves her. He is now a gay man. Marilyn and Tony tell each other that they love each other. The movie is really about acceptance. It's about living in a world that doesn't accept you for who you are. It's about how you can love others and still love yourself. In a society that hates you for who you are, it is hard to accept who you are. This movie shows that if you love someone, that person will love you back. There is no judgment here. It's all love.
