Description 1944 Germany. Ten year old Johannes Betzler, more commonly called Jojo, is the son of good Germans, his father away fighting in Italy, while he is under the care of his mother Rosie, with his older sister Inge recently having passed away from illness. With only one true friend in the form of same aged, bespectacled Yorki, Jojo, in wanting to fit in, is arguably entering what he would consider the most important phase of his young life in attending a Nazi youth camp presided over by Captain Klenzendorf, Captain K's almost too faithful assistant Freddy Finkel, and Fräulein Rahm, who takes Nazi policies in a slightly off-kilter direction. Despite being considered an outsider by most of the other youth in town, Jojo figures he has a leg up on everyone else at camp in that he is constantly being guided by the spirit of Der Führer himself, Adolf Hitler, whose personal bodyguard Jojo aspires to be when he grows up. In his general day-to-day life but also supported by his time at camp, Jojo has a hatred for Jewish people despite not really knowing anything about them or ever having met anyone of the Jewish faith, the ultimate goal to kill them. So when Jojo meets someone Jewish for the first time, especially as that meeting is in what is for him the most unlikely of circumstances, Jojo has to figure out what to do. While truly believing he is a Nazi despite not really knowing what that means, he has to decide either to follow what he has been taught in hating and trying to kill any Jewish person despite knowing that killing is not in his true nature, or not, which may have larger consequences with relation to family. While he decides, he truly gets to know the person beyond the label of "Jewish" which may factor into what happens.

I loved this movie. It is a movie about a WWII veteran and his two young kids, who are forced to leave their mother's home in search of a job in the 1940s. I had not seen this movie before so I couldn't judge it on it's own merits, but I was pleasantly surprised to see such a wonderful and realistic portrayal of a time in history. This movie should have had a greater profile in the first place because it deals with a time period that is fairly unknown to many Americans, and the people of that time are almost completely forgotten by most. I loved how the movie brought out so many emotions and events in such a short time. Some people have accused the movie of being "patriotic" and "anti-Japanese", but I think the movie is so realistic that the characters are no longer considered "Japanese". I especially liked how the movie showed the conditions in the camps and the families. The characters are very realistic and unlike the reality of the WWII era, the family of the main character didn't live in a state of "suppression" and even went to school. It shows that even during the war there was freedom of speech, love, and religion, which is something that is very hard to find in modern times. The movie also shows that the American WWII veterans did not necessarily belong to a very exclusive group of people. The main character, William, was part of the large group of veterans that left the country during WWII, but it is very clear that he didn't consider himself a "good American" because he didn't want to be just another Nazi. The movie is a wonderful portrayal of how soldiers go through their post-war years and how they are able to "grow up". The movie also depicts how important it is to know the history of the time. I also liked the scene where a woman gets out of a town car and walks the streets. It is just so touching and very moving. I am sure that a lot of people will not enjoy this movie, and even if they do it will probably not be appreciated as highly as I have. It is just a simple movie about life in the 1940s and the effects of that time period on people, and it is not a story that is going to get you to cry or cheer or be filled with joy. It is a simple movie about the time that we are living in today and that was never particularly popular in the time period it deals with. It is just a good movie, and it is one that I think everyone should see.

There are so many questions surrounding this movie that I don't know where to start. A little bit of trivia about the movie before I talk about it: In 1949, for the first time in history, a war in Asia was declared on Japan. They were on their knees in the desert trying to hold it. Then an American plane goes down. The US Army takes them to the nearest airfield and the army announces that they can be shot down if they don't leave the area. This is the beginning of the movie and this movie is a stand-up comedy of misadventures of a bunch of young men who had never flown before. In a way, this is very much like "The Big Lebowski" or "The Big Sleep". It is a very unique movie that I have never seen before, but I believe it is so well done that it deserves to be recognized for its brilliance. So here we go. In the 1950's, a group of American high school students go to Japan and show them some war. They get their plane blown up and they are at the mercy of Japanese soldiers. They are dropped at sea off a small island in the Pacific and when they are picked up, they find that the US Army has taken the island. Now the kids have to go back to the States to the nearest airfield and meet their superiors to go back to Japan. However, on the way, they see the Japanese soldiers and their antics. This is very funny and I found this movie to be very enjoyable. If you have never seen a war movie before, this one is a must. I highly recommend this movie. Rating: 9/10
