Description France, 1760. Marianne is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Because she is a reluctant bride-to-be, Marianne arrives under the guise of companionship, observing Héloïse by day and secretly painting her by firelight at night. As the two women orbit one another, intimacy and attraction grow as they share Héloïse's first moments of freedom. Héloïse's portrait soon becomes a collaborative act of and testament to their love.

There are some truly wonderful performances in this film, but they are overshadowed by the inept direction and some of the really bad editing. For instance, a scene in the shower, which is supposed to be a great deal of fun, is actually quite boring. Also, when a character is having a conversation, the dialog is often very, very flat. Then there's the constant bad editing throughout the film. I can't believe they were able to get so many of these scenes to be shot in a day, when there were so many important scenes that had to be cut. I can't believe that they were able to get the 3-hour cut of this film down to under 90 minutes. Then there's the editing. I think I've seen this done before, and it's much worse. I think the main problem is that the director has trouble with time-management. He seems to have some issues with pacing, and this affects the quality of the film. When you're editing, you need to work to make the scene flow, and he doesn't seem to have this problem. Instead, he uses the wrong key, and cuts things out at the wrong time. He also has a hard time with continuity, as there are some moments where he cuts back and forth from one scene to another without any clear cut. Some of these problems, I think, could be fixed by having the director edit the scenes at a fast enough rate to be a good director, but I think that's not a realistic thing to do. I think this is a great film, but it's definitely not one that I'd recommend to anyone. It's a great film, but it's not the best film I've ever seen.
