Ce magnifique gâteau is a French animated film based on the short story by Doris Lessing, written in 1951. It is directed by the highly regarded and veteran French animated filmmaker, Jean-Pierre Jeunet. It stars French singer/actress Rachel Portman, English actor Liam Neeson, British actor Ben Kingsley, Italian actor Paolo Sorrentino, and Belgian actor Vincent Cassel, who plays the main role of an ant. The film was released in France on the 8th of January of 2004, and in the United States on the 15th of June of 2004. The film has received generally favorable reviews, but is often criticized for being too political and sometimes for being too scary for children. In the United States, it is not even rated by the MPAA. In France, it is rated "PG" and is thus usually given a wide release. It was written by Jean Pierre Jeunet. He was not in the least surprised when the film was received so well, because he had originally intended to direct a children's book, but was unable to complete it due to financial constraints. The film's story centers on the theme of the lives of various animals who come together in the very same house. One day, the entire household is broken apart as the cats attack the wife, the dogs attack the children, and the chickens attack the pigs. The children escape and go off on their own to see the animals. The film is written by Jean Pierre Jeunet, but its only adapted from a children's book, and the film is pretty faithful to the story. The animation is fine, and the music is one of the best things about this film. The film is actually praised by some critics, and has been highly praised by others. Rachel Portman and Liam Neeson have both said they found the film extremely enjoyable, and many have given it high praise. Rachel Portman has even described it as one of her favorite films. The film was not an instant success in the United States, and it was even nominated for best animated feature in the Academy Awards. However, it received mixed reviews in France, and did not win any awards. In the United States, it was a box office success, and is still considered a very successful animated film. On the whole, Ce Magnifique gâteau is an excellent animated film. The story and animation are good, the music is good, and the story is interesting and captivating. It is not as good as the Disney films, and is not as good as the Toy Story films, but it is still a very good animated film. I give it 8/10.
