It is hard to believe that a film has been made about the same idea in the 80's. Lucy in the Sky is an excellent movie, and is as close to being a realistic sci-fi film as one can get. The movie has an interesting premise. It involves the United States military being sent into space to search for a planet that is supposedly full of life, and has a rich source of oxygen. The military learns of the existence of a similar planet that is not full of life, and is much colder, and it is believed that this planet could be the last chance for mankind. The military, including Colonel Hoffman (John Cusack), has to send a team to go find the planet, and that is where the movie begins. The film is not as bad as some would make it out to be, but there are a few things that don't work well. The film is set in the 80's, so it is not as successful in being realistic. It is a little too Hollywood-ish in the way that the military can get away with whatever they want. Also, the movie is not very long, so it is not that engaging. The characters are two dimensional. John Cusack, who plays the Colonel, is a typical military man, and his character is not believable. He is a guy that likes to have fun and play around, but he doesn't seem to have any real depth. Also, the only interesting character in the movie is Captain Spiker (Tom Cruise), a space-capable pilot, who is there to help the military. There are a few other characters that are interesting in the movie, but they are not really developed. The ending is a little cheesy, and not very well thought out. Overall, I enjoyed this movie, and would recommend it to anyone. It is a little too predictable, but still very good.
