It's been a long time since I last watched a movie in French with subtitles, and I was more than satisfied with this one. The main character is an adolescent named Georges, who grows up to become a war criminal, and we see him on many occasions as a rebel, lawbreaker and a "lover". At the beginning, we are shown his childhood, as he follows his gang from his home to a ghetto and then to a prison, where he is promised to help his brother who was a young man. The gang are no longer capable of doing good, and Georges wants nothing more than to punish them and help his brother. The movie is filmed in black and white, so we can see the performances without the subtitles. I love the way the director used black and white, which was quite difficult at first, but it took me by surprise as well. The flashbacks are also very important, and in the end the viewer can enjoy the end, which is the best thing that the movie has to offer. The cast is superb, with Gerard Depardieu, Denis Lavant, Jean Rochefort, Domnhall Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Claude Berri, Charlotte Rampling and Gilles Duceppe. Depardieu is a great actor, and his performance in the movie is probably the best I have ever seen him. Lavant is a good actor, and he is also in the movie and plays his part very well. The most impressive performance is provided by the little character Georges, who plays the role of the bad guy so well, that I wanted to give him an Oscar. He is also very well portrayed in the scenes where he is in his room, and he stands out among the other characters. The best scene in the movie is one where he is talking to his brother about the betrayal of his comrades. A very good movie. 7/10
