As an American, I expected this movie to be better than the book, but I don't think it was. I can't fault the acting, the script, the direction, the costumes. You name it. But the movie itself just felt rushed. The emotional scenes just didn't come together in a satisfying fashion, and it was just a little too rushed. I'm not saying it was bad, I just think it didn't feel like it had enough time to get the story and characters right. And there are a lot of things I didn't like. For example, while I was reading the book, the movie felt like it was skipping back and forth through Elizabeth's childhood and high school, and a lot of the scenes felt kind of contrived. For example, when Elizabeth was talking to Tom, she kept saying, "Yes, that's right," but in the movie, she says, "I didn't know. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry," and it just seemed like she was mumbling. I think they should have really stuck with the movie, since the book was so great. Elizabeth had so much personality, and it was hard for the movie to convey her. Also, while I thought the costumes were beautiful, I felt like the costumes were just kind of flat, and there were too many costumes for all of the characters. Also, while I thought they should have filmed the English in the movie better, the movie did get very distracting. The English were really hard to understand, because they were speaking in a very hushed voice, and it was difficult to follow what they were saying. Overall, I think this movie was pretty good. I just think the book was better, and it didn't have the emotional pull of the book. I think they could have made a better movie out of the book, and they didn't. But I think that is probably just personal taste. This is one of those movies that I think the audience will like more than the book, since I liked the movie better. But it was still a good movie.
