Saw this film at the film festival in South Korea. As a former student of this man, I have great respect for the man and his efforts. I believe that the majority of the audience did not see this film because they are new to the world of Asian cinema and simply cannot handle the story line. For those who do not know the story line, the story is that of a woman named Liao, who is a police officer in Japan and has been married for more than 10 years. After the death of her husband, she returns to Japan to be with her two children. She decides to visit her son in his small rural village where he has worked all his life. He is a very strict man who is hated by his neighbors. While they are out on a walk, Liao meets a man named Kondo. Kondo is a well respected scholar who is the head of a society of book-keepers. He is also the son of a wealthy farmer. The two men become friends and the relationship between them is to be admired. The young woman is not ready to leave Japan and, through her relationship with Kondo, she starts to have some ideas of how to overcome her loneliness and how to make her son see the benefits of growing up with a mother. When she returns to Japan, she is met by Kondo who does not welcome her and Kondo insists that she be married to Kondo's son. The relationship between the two grows closer and closer until Kondo and Liao are married. When she arrives in Japan, Liao finds out that she is pregnant. The father of the baby does not want Liao to be married and Liao is not ready to leave Japan. She is forced to return to Japan. Kondo's son dies and Liao leaves Japan and returns to Japan. Her daughter, who is about 10 years old, gets to know Liao and her relationship with Kondo is gradually revealed. This film is well directed. I am a fan of cinematography. The scenes are beautiful and natural. The shots of the landscapes are beautiful and detailed. The use of natural light and natural sounds are also excellent. The acting of the two leads are superb. Both of them are very good. Liao is also very good. Her acting is convincing and realistic. She does not do the "acting" as if she were acting in a play. She does not overact and she shows a strong connection to the character. Kondo is also very good. I feel that he is a very good actor. He is convincing
