This is a remarkable film, not just for its symbolism, but for its artistic richness. The first half is a black comedy about the commercialisation of the modern world, and the world of the film's protagonists is a vivid mirror of the modern world. The main character is Pedro, a young painter, in search of an artistic outlet. He lives with his mother and sister, and is attracted to the company of the artist El Haddadi, who is writing about his own personal world. In order to create the first painting, Pedro has to follow the steps of the master, through the painters' society, and finally to a painting exhibition, where he will get his first opportunity to experience what it is to be a great artist. Pedro's journey through the world of the artists, and his obsession with their art, makes this film a highly entertaining one. The second half of the film is the most interesting part, with a rich combination of artistic metaphors, colourful characterisations and interesting philosophical and political statements. The way Pedro is presented, and the way he deals with his mother, is also fascinating. The only problem with this film is that it ends too abruptly, and it has been truncated by a weak ending. It would have been better if the second half had been longer, and the final image of Pedro's painting had been longer and more complex. The performances are fine, and the animation is beautiful. The film has a wonderful colour palette, and a very clear sense of the time it is set in. However, I did not find the film's final message, to be particularly profound. The film has a very odd, and sometimes repetitive sense of humour, and there are times where I found myself laughing at the very material I was trying to be serious about. There are times when I also found myself thinking that the film was made for children. The ending was also a little disappointing, and was more of a "why did I wait so long" than a "what happens now" ending. I don't think that I would want to watch this film again.
