Although the "black and white" documentary style did detract from the overall authenticity of the show, it was not necessary. The audience was truly mesmerized by the race. However, I thought the black and white footage in the beginning could have been utilized in a much more exciting and dramatic way. At times the camera is far too close to the action, which can be distracting. For example, the camera lingers on the house to which Chane's mom has just left, during the final race. Another example is during the final race when the camera lingers on a black girl's face. The audience has no way of knowing what she is thinking or feeling during these scenes. One scene with two white men is another example. They are not scary, and they do not appear to be really threatening. However, there is no way that they could possibly have their hands on Chane, and no way that she would have gotten away with her mother and boyfriend in the house. In fact, when the two men attempt to capture her, they seem to be trying to kill her. This leads the audience to believe that they are really in danger. Additionally, it would be interesting to hear the voice of the mother in the documentary. I also thought that the one shot of a large motor scooter, which would normally be a scary sight, could have been better used. Another scene that could have been much more dramatic and dramatic is when Chane is talking to her mom about her mother. However, it was not exciting, and it could have been done much better. I think it was a good documentary, but it was not as exciting as the race itself. Overall, the documentary is very moving, but it is not enough to save this documentary from being very disappointing.
