One of the most fascinating aspects of "The Big Sleep" is how it has been used as a justification for the horrors of WWII. But, at the same time, it is the story of how the Germans and the Allies came to understand and respect each other, and what they accomplished together. The film starts out with the story of a young man named Karl, played by Richard Gere, who, in the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor, is recruited by the U.S. Army to go into the Pacific theater to assist in the defense of Japan. Karl is recruited by Lt. Colonel John Stone (Robert Redford), who is trying to find an ace pilot for the U.S. Army. Karl is told that he must fly his plane through Japan, and he does, but, as is his habit, he crashes his plane and is captured by the Japanese. He is then put in a POW camp, and is then taken to a small island, which he meets the Japanese pilot, Akira (Nobuhiro Araki), who is a POW himself. He tells Karl that the Japanese, who have been in the Pacific for thousands of years, have a way of communicating with each other, and he knows that he is not alone. After the war, Karl is released, and goes back to his hometown in New Jersey, where he is reunited with his family. He also meets up with a young American woman named Helen (Naomi Watts), who he falls in love with. He then goes back to the U.S. and gets a job as a military radio operator, and begins to learn Japanese. He also begins to understand the difference between good and evil, and he becomes convinced that the Japanese were fighting for their country, but, in the end, they were fighting for something else. "The Big Sleep" is a beautiful film. It has a very strong message of forgiveness and respect. It is also a great story about how a human being can change, and how a society can come to understand that people are not all the same, and that people are not the same as they were before the war. "The Big Sleep" is a film that, at the same time, it is also a very sad story about the horrors of war.
